Japan 2015

Well by know everyone is back in their own countries after a hectic few days in Japan. The World tournament is only held every four years, but what a tournament, on the final day Tokyo metropolitan Gymnasium was sold out.

The atmosphere was electric, for those who had travelled from far away it must have been a great experience. The fighting was hard, but I thought that low kicks where not so popular this time, rather the kaiten or rolling kick seemed to be in favour. Low kick were used but I can’t remember seeing any scores from them, but we did get some spectacular knockouts with no injuries.

Anyway after the Tournament there was the usual Sayonara party, but for many it was not sayonara as we had our seminar and grading yet to come. The seminar was full, we had 420 participants from 49 countries and 109 who wanted to grade, this was the biggest so far. So you can see that the WKO Shinkyokushinkai organization is growing.

Trying to give as much knowledge to so many in such a short time was hard, but I did my best, after the seminar there was the usual grill party where the students who passed the grading was announced.

All in all a very successful trip to Japan, we should say thank you for all the work that was done before hand to make the event a tremendous success.

European tournament 2015

This weekend April 17/19 we have our European tournament in Warsaw after its all over we will have European champions in both kata and kumite. We also have our World tournament this year, quite a busy time for those who will compete. When there was only one Kyokushin organisation we had one World champion and one European champion, those days are gone. We have so many tournaments at all levels that produce champions.

Sosai talked about the World tournament being the Karate Olympics. There will never be one champion any more there is far to much politics separating the various organisations. Even if there are some who try to make a united tournament, I wonder why? Is it really for the students or for themselves.

If their aim is to unit Kyokushin why do they have separate organizations? We are all guilty in some way of letting the style split, its sad.

Memories from the past

Some memories from the first world tournament. I guess that we were rough and ready for anything, not so many really understood the rules. Everyone was excited that there was going to compete in the first world tournament and with the knockdown rules, exciting days. For most competitors it was a dream come true going to Japan for the first and maybe the only time. In time the reality of the situation and why they were there started to sink in, they have to fight full contact. For many it was a long and tiring journey and then there was the jet lag, for many by the time they were ready to fight they were ready for bed. However once the tournament started the adrenalin took over and everyone did their best.

World Tournament October 2007

This was very good and well organized tournament. The  competitors were well prepared. In my opinion day one was the most exiting with  a lot of Hiza Geri knockouts.  This year the rolling kick was very effective and popular. After the tournament the branch chief seminar was  held with about 200 people in attendants. It was a good camp and a fitting end to  the World Tournament 2007.

World Tournament 4th of dec 1999

Time goes quickly, here we are again close to another World Tournament, fighters from all over the World have been preparing for this event, as have the referees and judges.

Some will be disappointed after the Tournament, some will be happy. The important thing is that we all get together and remember what Sosai did for us, he gave us this Tournament. Now there are two such tournaments, two world champions and two organizations? There will never be another true world champion. I hope that every competitor fights according to the kyokushin spirit and that we all enjoy the two days of competition.

Sosai was very adamant that we were Budo Karate and that we should have honour and good manners. It happens so often in other kinds of sports that the competitors argue with the referees and even fight amongst themselves. Is this what we want to teach? I hope that Kyokushin is not just fighting it is many things, honour and manners are just a part of our style.

Some time ago just before one of our European Tournaments one of the competing countries had been refused exit visas for their team. A rival organization had spread some stories about them, causing problems for them. Luckily the EKO managed to convince the appropriate people that the stories were false and they were granted visas. Is this what Kyokushin has become? We all claim to train Kyokushin but who amongst us understands what that means.
