This clip is a short introduction to the five Pinan Katas. The Pinan kata originated in Okinawa Pinan can be translated as “Peaceful mind peaceful safety” and were created by Anko Itosu in 1905. When Gichin Funakoshi brought karate to Japan, he renamed the kata to Heian, which is translated as “peaceful and calm”. I like to think of them as “Peace and Harmony”.
In this clip I am showing some application ideas of the four basic blocks Jodan Uke, Soto Uke, Uchi Uke and Gedan Barai. These four blocks are always in my kihon lessons when I teach. I also let the students practise different levels of bunkai in groups and make them analyse different techniques so they can come up with their own ideas. This helps them to understand what they are doing.
The SKK technical meeting has finished, almost two days, of training and ideas. There where about 60 club leaders attending from all over Sweden. Although its called a technical meeting there were lots of discussions around politics etc, sometimes a necessary evil at these events. We also covered refereeing and competitions, two long but important days.

We filmed a short video clip in slow motion as a test for my dojo Gothenburg’s Karate Kai. This will be used to advertise the dojo and to inform any future members about our beginners course. Like most dojos, advertising is very important and the competition is high for new members and your budget is limited. Next term we will see if our advertising campaign gives us any results and maybe try some new ideas.
It´s the beginning of a new year and all sports club etc. are out to get new members as we all are. When I look to see what’s on offer I see advertisements for some new idea or concept, on closer study I see things that kyokushin is offering now only we don’t give it a fancy name. We call it hard training and then there is the personal trainer who seems to be popular those of you who train at my dojo have a personal trainer every lesson, I walk around correcting you giving you advice and shouting at you. Everything goes in circles the same as the Kanku, we start at one point and eventually return there.
This video was filmed 1994. Even when it is almost over 20 years old it is still valid something’s never goes out of date. The video, which was filmed the old fashioned way using a film camera introduce you to some basic Kyokushin kumite techniques I used when I was competing. They are not complicated combinations but straight forward ideas that you can adapt to suit your style of fighting. This film also includes live action Flashes From the past – when I won the European Championship, 1978. Maybe some of you were there? It was an historic event the very first European championship, I don’t know exactly how many spectators we had but it was in the thousands, good days.
It’s 2014 and for many of you it’s time to reflect what you may or may not wanted to achieve in 2013. Some may have aimed at succeding in a competition others wanted to make the next grade. Perhaps for quite a few of you it was just going to the dojo and doing your best. My goals were trying to improve and develop kyokushin karate, some things I managed to achieve such as sorting out the bunkai for kata for example which by the way is still work in progress.
Whatever your goals for 2014 remember this; Following the Martial Way is like scaling a cliff. Continue upwards without rest. It demands absolute and unfaltering devotion to the task at hand. Number two of Sosai’s eleven mottoes.
I was watching television the other evening and on came the commercials. I guess that none of you pay that much attention unless it’s something that interests you. Reality shows do not interest me, we have enough reality around us on a daily basis. Anyway, the commercials start and all of a sudden you hear insults and vulgar comments and this is entertainment. Where am I going with this you may ask, well if society can tolerate this and call it entertainment then how does it effect the world around us. If society accepts this behaviour as acceptable then it becomes normal behaviour. That’s why we have to try and instill, good manners, discipline and respect into our students.
The Martial Arts way begins and ends with courtesy. Therefore, be properly and genuinely courteous at all times
We will train our hearts and bodies for a firm unshaken spirit. I suppose that sums up what we are trying to do, not just learn new technique etc but also improve our well-being by training Kyokushin. Hearts and bodies, that something inside us all that we strive to develop and control that comes through plain hard work, perhaps for some of us we will never be able to develop that side of our personality100 percentage, but at least we try (a firm unshaken spirit).
You have to push yourself to the limit and then a little more, whether it’s Kihon, Kata or Kumite, I often tell my students, “it’s easy to give up”
So perhaps that should be your New Year promise to yourself.
Never give up!

“Eventdagarna” is a big trade fair held in Gothenburg. Training for Life a company based in Gothenburg together with Gothenburgs Karate Kai held a demonstration for the public. We demonstrated basics, fighting and tamashiwari. There was a big audients and was a successful event for both parties. As usual it was the tamashiwari that most people were fascinated with although you heard the applause for the fighting. It was a very good day to advertise Kyokushin Karate.
