Why do so many stop training?

Why do so many stop training? Perhaps it’s because they don’t have the time or family life changes, work gets in the way or they just loose interest. Commitment is probably the main reason, I think many start training with the idea that its some kind of quick fix. Train for a couple of months, learn a lot of kicks get a black belt and that’s it.

When I talk about a lifetime of training I mean just that, its not just about learning Kyokushin but keeping you healthy, which after all is important for everybody. You commit yourself to have a healthy lifestyle through training, keeping your mind and body in good condition.

I meet so many old students who stopped training many years ago and they all say the same thing, that they regret that they had not continued.

Don´t have any regrets just keep going.

Just a thought…

This time of year in most dojo’s students are thinking about their grading. I imagine that for most dojo´s the grading is sometime in December just before the holidays. I do not want to talk about the club grading but about Kyokushin groups accepting grades from other groups.

Sometimes we have people who have obtained their black belt in another Kyokushin organization and for some reason they want to change to another organization and this is where the problem starts. Having a black belt from one organization does not mean it has the same value in another. So when they are told that they must take their grading again, two things happen they say Osu which is the correct attitude or they join another Kyokushin organization where their grade is accepted without question.

There are some who walking around with a high grade who left the SKK (Swedish Karate Kyokushin Organization) to join another group.  A short while after they obtain a higher grade. What excuse do they give themselves in order to accept their new grade?

Teaching in Banzai

I often go to Banzai Karate Kai, another Kyokushin dojo in Gothenburg and help them with technique etc. This time I focused on kata, which is always a problem for us all. If you do not practice constantly you loose your feeling for the kata. There is no short cut, it takes a long time to really understand the tempo and timing in kata. We are not robots so we do perform kata a little differently after all we are individuals and that means we have our own personality and way of doing things, even if we perform the same kata it can look a little different.

Memories from the past

Some memories from the first world tournament. I guess that we were rough and ready for anything, not so many really understood the rules. Everyone was excited that there was going to compete in the first world tournament and with the knockdown rules, exciting days. For most competitors it was a dream come true going to Japan for the first and maybe the only time. In time the reality of the situation and why they were there started to sink in, they have to fight full contact. For many it was a long and tiring journey and then there was the jet lag, for many by the time they were ready to fight they were ready for bed. However once the tournament started the adrenalin took over and everyone did their best.

The SKK technical meeting

The SKK technical meeting has finished, almost two days, of training and ideas. Sensei Fredrik Gunmark came along with his testing equipment, by the time he had finished the dojo looked like something from a science fiction movie. He also gave a lecture about how to improve  training technique, very interesting. There was also a lecture about how to eat while preparing for a competition, so we all had a lot to think about. There was also tecnical training and lots of feedback, with idea’s to take back to the dojo. We also had time to sit and chat about the Kyokushin World. There were twenty two dojos represented by seventy one black and brown belts, a successful weekend.

What is focus?

What is focus?
Focus means “to cause to be concentrated, to pay attention to the task at hand and not let your thoughts wander”. You can focus on what you see or what you hear, sometimes both. Rather than think of focus as a whole you can split it into two categories.

Automatic focus
This is fun, focusing on something you enjoy is easy, a game of rugby or a good movie for example. This kind of focus does not make you tired or bored and you can keep your focus for a relatively long time.

Concentrated focus
The more difficult of the two as you have to concentrate on what you are doing which is focusing on the task at hand. Whether it is sitting at a seminar and listening to a lot of speakers or sitting at the office trying to finish your paper work.

Why can´t I focus?
How long can you focus on any subject or object?

Focus period
You focus period can be very short, it varies from person to person and what the subject is. But whatever you are doing your focus period comes and goes, it fades in and out. Imagine you are trying to get a picture on your television and you have a bad signal, the picture comes and goes, just as your focus period.

Noise
Noise will also distract you, not necessary a loud one but a constant noise that is there all the time and eventually it irritates you so much that you start to focus on the noise. How many times has that happened to you?

Day dreaming
You are driving your car; focusing on the road ahead then all of a sudden your car jerks suddenly. You have started to mix together other thoughts, fantasy and reality become one while driving. If you look at something long enough it starts to change shape, you are getting tired you are day dreaming.

Stress – What causes it?

This is in no way meant as a medical guide see your doctor if you are unwell. Like many other things in life it is a combination of circumstances. If you cannot focus on the job at hand then you could become stressed especially if it is important.  There are many kinds of stress provoking situations in our daily lives that can affect your performance at work, school and home.

Daily problems for example, getting the kids off to school on time, catching the bus to work or even worse driving to work and being stuck in traffic. Going to the bank during your lunch hour etc. These apparently daily routines can be stressful which in turn can reduce our ability to focus and concentrate.

Whenever we feel uneasy and a little stressed, breathing is very important
How many times have you heard, take a deep breath and take it easy. They seem to cover all situations from taking  your driving test to going to the dentist. Try to imagine those moments in your life when you needed to take a deep breath how much better you felt at that moment. What are your doing when you take a deep breath you are renewing your energy and focus.

  • Relax before you go to work or into that important meeting, don’t attempt anything that may cause you stress.
  • Concentrate on what you have to do, focus on the task on hand, feeling in control of a situation helps you relax.
  • Try to feel you body, start at the feet and work your way up telling your body to relax.
  • Keep things in perspective, how important is your meeting, seminar or deadline, if things do not go the way you want what will happen? Is it the end of the world?
  • Make a note of those moments of stress or uneasiness so that you can refer to them if they ever appear again.
  • Knowing before hand that you are potentially going into a stressful situation can help you relax, it’s a form of self defense.
  • Recognize your symptoms of stress.
  • Look at your lifestyle and see what can be changed.
  • Try and relax and breath.
  • Exercise, instead of trying to park your car as close to the office as possible try parking further away so you have a little exercise and fresh air.
  • Watch your diet try to eat a balanced diet.
  • Get enough rest and sleep.
  • Whenever you start to feel stressed do something you enjoy if only for a few minutes, listen to some music.
  • Don’t try to be perfect, do the best you can.

The trend in karate…

The trend in karate today is to call it a sport, what is a sport? If you look in a dictionary the definition is, a game or competitive activity, especially an outdoor one, involving physical exertion. There is competition but with yourself, to fight against your own problems and weaknesses are profoundly more  important than winning a competition against others. Sometimes we train outdoors and certainly it involves physical exertion, there the similarity ends.

In today’s sports, how often do you see the players or competitors arguing with the judgment of referees, even fighting one another. Excuses are made such as  the stress of the moment and a lot is at stake, which usually means money. Is money so important that this is the way to act, is this the way in which to try  to improve the society in which we live. We must set an example for the younger  generation, they are the future, how can we blame them for bad behavior when we are supposed to set the example.

We even see the winners holding their hands up high showing that they are number one, is this the Budo Sosai talked about. I teach my students to be humble in  defeat and victory.

It amuses me to watch two of my students fighting, sometimes one is hit rather hard but he does not lose his temper. His first comment is to congratulate his opponent on such a fine match and to find out how it was that he was hit and  with what technique.

Little did I know that when I started training how it would influence the rest of my life. From those early days I progressed to become one of the highest grades in the Kyokushin world.

At the age of 21 I went to study in Japan with Sosai Oyama (1971), the founder of Kyokushin Karate, I stayed for two years. During  my time in Japan I rose to the rank of 3rd Dan and completed the  “100-man fight”, a task involving fighting one hundred matches of a two-minute  duration without a break, some years later I found out that I was the first to complete the task in one day.

I was inexperienced when I competed for the first time in the 1971 Kyokushin All Japan Tournament. I did not do so well. Then in the 1972 Kyokushin All Japan Tournament I was runner up a feat not matched by any other none Japanese.  During my fighting career I was British and European champion. My last  competition was in 1979 at the second Kyokushin world tournament where I took  fifth place.

Competing although an important part of Kyokushin, should not be over emphasized, as is  the case today. It does not matter where I go to in the world competing is high on the agenda.

Today more and more dojos are basing their regular training on competition training and ignoring other aspects of Kyokushin training. Remember that competition is not Kumite! There are rules and regulations limiting your technique, which is good, as we need to protect the competitors. I competed for  many years but I always remembered that it was a game for a day.

The more we focus on competition the more we ignore and forget the true meaning of  Kyokushin.

What is a grading?

A grading is an assessment of a students ability to perform  a number of techniques, kata etc. according to our grading system. The  student’s manner and understanding of Kyokushin are also taken into account. Although these points are not written down, the instructor should teach them. The Grading is a privilege giving by the instructor it  is not something the student is entitled to.

Many dojos have a guide as to how many lessons you should  have trained before attempting to grade. Because you trained a number of times it does not give you the right to grade, it is always the instructor who has the last word. In Gothenburg’s Karate Kai my students have the opportunity to  grade twice a year. Like most examinations not everybody passes. Students sometimes stop training if they do not pass a grading, which means they did not embrace “The Kyokushin Way”.

During my many years of teaching in other countries I have  come across situations when after I have failed or even refused someone a  grading. I later found out that they have changed organization and have  acquired a new grade. What does this tell you about such people?

Remember that grading is not obligatory you can still develop yourself without grading. Sosai Oyama would say that karate is for everybody he did not mean that everybody could obtain a black belt.

Training

What does the word training mean; to bring a person to a high degree of proficiency in a specific skill. I am sure that you participate in some kind of physical activity, if you do not then you should. For those who like to jog you probably keep a note of the time it takes to run a certain distance. Those of you who like to spend time in the gym will check to see if you are getting stronger by lifting heavier weights. In both cases you are trying to get better at what you are doing.

Focus and concentration are also skills we must train everyday.

It is easy to measure physical training, today you can lift 50 kilos one month later 60, today it takes ten minutes to run a given distance one month later, nine minutes. So how can we measure focus and concentration? We measure by what we see and what we feel this is what makes karate so difficult.
